Regional Development Agency Relationship

Our Regional Development Agency is the Northwest Development Agency and we work with it to deliver sustainable economic development and regeneration in the region.

Government Offices work with the nine Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) on behalf of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR). More information on the national picture

The Northwest Regional Development Agency has the largest government budget of all the Regional Development Agencies in England. Its role is to provide strategic leadership, programmes and funding to drive the sustainable economic development and regeneration of the region. The context for the Agency's work is the Regional Economic Strategy 2006 which focuses on five objectives:

  • Business
  • Skills and Employment
  • People and Jobs
  • Infrastructure
  • Quality of Life

RDA Relationship

Government Office for the North West is responsible for managing Central Government’s day-to-day relationship with the Northwest Regional Development Agency.  This involves:

  • liaising with the Northwest Regional Development Agency, Government Departments and other Government Offices on RDA-related issues
  • administering the annual programme for the appointment of non-executive members to the NWDA Board
  • supporting NWDA in its regular reviews of the Regional Economic Strategy;
  • providing input to the corporate planning process to ensure the Agency has relevant and challenging targets
  • contributing to the development of national policy relating to RDAs

Appointments to the Northwest Regional Development Agency Board

The Agency is a Non Departmental Public Body and is governed by a business-led non-executive board which provides the strategic direction for the organisation.  Government Office for the North West administers the rolling programme of appointments to this board.  The annual recruitment exercise commences in spring each year with advertisements in the national press and appropriate websites.

Board members need a sound knowledge of the region and an understanding of the factors that promote economic development and must be willing to commit a minimum of two days per month.  It is important that the Board reflects the diversity of the region and we are particularly keen to receive applications from women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.
