Skills: the National Picture

Government Offices support the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) in improving skills. The role varies around the country though all GOs promote and support the following DIUS priorities:

  • improving the literacy, language and numeracy skills of 2.25m adults through the Skills for Life programme.
  • reducing by at least 40 per cent the number of working adults who don’t have an NVQ level 2 or equivalent qualification, by 2010
  • supporting one million adults in the workforce to achieve Level 2 qualifications (equivalent to 5 A*-C GCSEs) between 2003 and 2006

Much of the work we do involves our partners which include Learning and Skills Councils, Regional Development Agencies, the Department for Work and Pensions and JobCentre Plus. Specific roles include:

  • challenging and supporting the Regional Skills Partnership and ensuring that they set regional targets for the achievement of Level 2 qualifications
  • ensuring that the skills agenda is effectively linked to the children and learner’s agenda
  • acting as an observer at the board meetings of the Learning and Skills Councils in the region; and
  • advising regional partners on Departmental priorities, delivery programmes and key outcomes
